The isolated community of Møsstrond lies at between 900 and 1000 metres, in upper Telemark, along the shores of lake Møsvatn, near the town of Rjukan (of Heavy Water sabotage fame) and about 3 hours drive due west of Oslo.
The community is unique in southern Norway in as much as most of the 30 farms spread out along the 40 km. long lake are without road connection and the only means of transport is by boat in the summer and snow scooter in the winter. A small passenger ferry plies the lake during the summer months, calling in at the various farms and huts along the shoreline. The property is situated on the island of Hovden, in the central part of the lake together with the local church and two farms.
“Even though the furrowed face of the plateau dominates, there are extremes of mountain topography. The western part of the plateau has a more of an alpine character that plunges into narrow valleys and the Sørfjord, and in the northwest lies one of Norway's largest glaciers, Hardangerjøkulen. Hårteigen peak in the centre of the plateau is the signpost. With its 1,690 meter summit elevation and characteristic hat shape, it can be seen from almost everywhere on the plateau.” For more information on the Hardangervidda go to VisitNorway.com. |
The Mosstrond Turisthytte was buzzing with activity over Easter. In total we had 39 guests enjoying the almost perfect skiing conditions.
