I don’t have any experience in skiing or trekking! Can I still come?

Of course! Our staff have years of experience in training beginners in survival and cross-country skiing techniques. Møsstrond Turisthytte is proud to be able to offer an activity packed holiday for people from all types of backgrounds and experience levels!

How do I get to Møsstrond Turisthytte? It’s on an island!

We are proud to be in the middle of nowhere but accessible at the same time! Please find your way to our ‘how to get here’ section which explains, well, exactly that. If you still need any information, please contact us.

I don’t have any skis, does this mean I have to walk through the snow?

No! Although we advise you to bring your own skis we have a collection of cross-country skis for those who don’t have skis of their own. For ski-rental please contact us at least three weeks before your stay so we can make sure that we have your skis and boots ready for your upon arrival.

Can it get really cold up there?

Cold enough to have guaranteed snow for over six months! The coldest months are January and February where temperatures can reach - 40 Celsius. Typical temperatures are between - 5 and - 15 Celsius. If you come prepared this should not make a difference. March, April and even May can be very nice alternatives as snow can be combined with a nice Nordic Spring Sun, warming you up and even providing you with a tan!

How about the food?

We are a self-catering hostel with four well equipped kitchens for you to impress other guests. We advise that you stock up well before you come as the closest supermarket is half a days skiing away. If you come from abroad, please contact us so we can stock up for you.

What do I need to bring?

All year round you will need to bring a sleeping bag, or bed linen, and your own towels. In the summer we advise you to bring your trekking gear, swimming gear and some waterproof clothes for when you wish to go boating. In the winter bring good protective ski-clothes, comfortable enough to go on tours. That means plenty of socks! If you need any advice what further to bring, please contact us.

Will I see an elk during my stay at Møsstrond Turisthytte?

Elks are not very shy and they are around. There is a slight chance you will get to see one, but if you do your patience will be rewarded as it is one of the most impressive sights in Scandanavia. However, there is plenty of wildlife for you to enjoy such as, reindeer (the area has the largest herd of wild reindeer in Europe), elk, lynx, and wolverine; fish, trout and arctic char; birds, golden eagle, snowy owl, ptarmigan, crane, blue throat and many waders.
