Møsstrond Turisthytte started life as the community school 140 years ago. For years children in the area came to the island which served as an all year round boarding school. As the church can also be found on Hovden, the island was – and is – very much the center of community life.

Due to dwindling numbers of children living in the area the school had to close down and the council (kommune) decided to sell. It was however careful in chosing the next owner as it was seeking a continuation of activity on the island.

A small group of family and friends decided – after years of coming to, and living in, the area – to bring back life to the old school. This is how Møsstrond Turisthytte was born in 2008.
